HOUSTON, Texas (June 10, 2022) — A slightly different type of racing machines will join with the Gulf Coast Racing Series (GCRS) divisions for a thrilling holiday Texas twin-bill, as the Spec Miata series invades Houston Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 2.
Spec Miata is a type of racing car used in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA); National Auto Sport Association and Midwestern Council of Sports Car Club road racing events. The Spec Miata class is intended to provide the opportunity to compete in low-coast cars with limited modifications.
Richard Tomlin is the Series Director for Spec Miata, and says he's excited to bring the tour to HMP.
“We are shooting for 40 cars, and I'm reaching out every day to get more,” Tomlin said. “These guys are always looking for something different to try, and the oval at HMP provides exactly that. I think they're going to love the experience, and fans will get to see a different type of car compete, as well.
“We'll have a practice session so guys can see their lap times. As for the race itself, we'll run a 25 lap segment, take a 10 to 15 minute break, then run a second 25 lap segment. Our overall winner will be based on the results of both sessions. It'll be a challenge for drivers and outside of their normal world.”
Racers will draw a chip to determine their starting positions in the first 25-lap segment.
Adding these exciting little yet racy cars to the program will add a new flair. The July 2 event is 'Texas Racers Reunion Night' at the speedway, as the GCRS welcomes racers from the past to HMP for a night filled with Special Recognition.
Headlining the show is a 50-lap feature for the Advance Auto Parts Pro Trucks. Also on the card are the Carquest Pro Mods (50 laps); Outlaws, Wheelman Sportsman Series, Eco Stocks, Legacy cars and Naskarts. It's a full slate of exciting short track action as the nation celebrate Independence Day.
Gina Schild-Knowles is busy preparing for the July 2 event and says Spec Miata is a great addition.
“I think the Spec Miata cars will add a cool and exciting new flair to our event in Houston,” Schild-Knowles said. “I love the format they are using and can't wait to see how those racers handle the oval. Our own GCRS racers will be watching, and fans should really enjoy it, as well.”
