Lights Out
The Homestead-Miami Speedway weekend for NASCAR featured all three of the National Series, headlined by the Straight Talk Wireless 400 for the NASCAR Cup Series. Bubba Wallace, Justin Allgaier and Ross Chastain all picked up Xfinity Fastest Lap awards during the weekend.
Friday's Baptist Health 200 for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series kicked off the weekend at Homestead in dramatic fashion, as Kyle Larson drove from a spin to a win in the event. Another NASCAR Cup Series competitor, Ross Chastain, registered the Xfinity Fastest Lap of the race.
Chastain had just taken the lead from Corey Heim on lap 96, and turned a lap of 32.543 seconds one lap later for the Xfinity Fastest Lap. Of course, as Chastain has declared for championship eligibility in the NASCAR Cup Series, he was not awarded the bonus point that typically accompanies the Xfinity Fastest Lap Award.
Justin Allgaier saved the best for last in Saturday's Hard Rock Bet 300 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Allgaier set the Xfinity Fastest Lap of the event on the final lap, during an overtime restart that saw Allgaier secure the victory.
Allgaier lined up fourth for the chaotic final restart, but pulled alongside Austin Hill in a battle for the lead as contact between Kyle Larson and Sam Mayer stacked up the inside lane. Allgaier cleared Hill exiting turn four coming to the white flag, allowing him to turn a lap of 33.494 seconds on the final lap and steal the Xfinity Fastest Lap award from Jesse Love.
Allgaier added to his points lead with Saturday's win, his second of the season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Last year's series champion now leads Sam Mayer by 29 points in the standings.
Bubba Wallace had an impressive showing in Sunday's Straight Talk Wireless 400. The driver of the No. 23 Toyota Camry for 23XI Racing led 56 laps and finished third in the NASCAR Cup Series event at Homestead-Miami.
Shortly after taking the lead from eventual winner Kyle Larson on lap 218, Bubba Wallace set the Xfinity Fastest Lap of the day at 32.335 seconds. Wallace led until Alex Bowman assumed the top spot on lap 235, leading to his battle with teammate Kyle Larson for the win.
Wallace moved up to seventh in points with the podium finish on Sunday, moving up four spots.
All three NASCAR National Series will once again be in action this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. The Cook Out 400 for the NASCAR Cup Series takes place on Sunday, March 30 at 3:00 p.m. ET, with coverage on FS1, MRN Radio and SiriuxXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
