Jason Burdett Tapped to Join LEGACY MOTOR CLUB as Jimmie Johnson Crew Chief
Dec 12, 2023
Veteran NASCAR crew chief Jason Burdett is no longer with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, amidst personnel changes on the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE, the team confirmed to Racing America on Friday.
Burdett was hired by LEGACY MOTOR CLUB ahead of the current season to serve as crew chief for seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and team co-owner Jimmie Johnson.
After six races working together, the driver-crew chief pairing had only managed a pair of 28th-place finishes at Daytona International Speedway and Dover Motor Speedway.
Before joining the organization, the 45-year-old crew chief spent nine seasons working as a crew chief for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, where he collected 18 victories while working with drivers Regan Smith, Justin Allgaier, and Brandon Jones.
A team spokesperson also confirms that other personnel changes were made on the No. 84 Toyota Camry, as well, in addition to Burdett's departure from the team.
The changes to the team's makeup will not have an impact on Johnson's schedule for the remainder of the season, with the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE still scheduled to return to the racetrack at Kansas Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and the season-finale at Phoenix Raceway.
Since returning to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023, Johnson has worked with two crew chiefs -- Todd Gordon and Jason Burdett. In his nine starts in the seventh-generation racecar, the El Cajon, California-native has a best finish of 28th and five DNFs.
Johnson's most recent start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway appeared to be the most promising, the 83-time NASCAR Cup Series winner running inside the top-15 at times throughout the afternoon, before getting crashed out in the final stage of the event.
