HISTORY OF THE RACE OF CHAMPIONS 250

The history of the Race of Champions dates back to 1951, with the first running of what was then called the National Open at the historic Langhorne Speedway. Hully Benn won the inaugural running of the event in 1951. What started on the treacherous mile of dirt at Langhorne, Pennsylvania has become one of the most storied events in racing.

Langhorne remained the home of the National Open through 1971, with the track paved in 1965. The 1971 National Open, won by Roger Treichler, was the last race held at Langhorne Speedway before the facility closed.

With Langhorne's closing, the event moved to the 1.5-mile Trenton Speedway in 1972 and rebranded as the Race of Champions. Geoff Bodine won the first Race of Champions at Trenton in 1972, with other Trenton winners including the likes of Richie Evans, Ray Hendrick and Maynard Troyer.

The event found a new home at Pocono Raceway in 1977, competing on the 2.5-mile speedway. Troyer, Bodine and Evans all collected wins on the "tricky triangle" before the event shifted to the 0.75-mile short track layout at Pocono, utilizing the superspeedway's frontstretch. The Race of champions remained at Pocono until 1991.

Since the move to the infield short track at Pocono, the Race of Champions has remained on short tracks. The event moved to Flemington Speedway in 1992, then to Oswego Speedway in 1996 where it remained through 2016, outside of the 2015 edition taking place at the Chemung Speedrome.

In 2017, the Race of Champions found its new and current home at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, Pennsylvania. Matt Hirschman won the first four Race of Champions at Lake Erie, but Andy Jankowiak and Patrick Emerling have won the last two runnings of the event.

Hirschman's four Lake Erie wins give him a total of eight Race of Champions victories, more than any other driver. Over its proud history, the list of Race of Champions winners reads as a history book for the best of the best in Modified racing.
