Lights Out
No stranger to success at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, Ron Silk is a now a winner with the Monaco Modfieid Tri-Track Series at Thompson.
Silk earned the victory in the Propane Plus Heating & Cooling 75 for the Modified competitors on Saturday, besting a field of 27 cars for the win. The Connecticut driver started ninth and took the lead from Stephen Kopcik on lap 32 en route to the win.
A seven-time race winner with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Thompson, Silk can now add a Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series trophy from Thompson to his collection. It is his fifth career victory with the series.
"We had a great car all day today," said Silk after the win. "It was really fast, had a lot of speed, drove really well. I can't thank my entire team enough. Tyler Haydt and Joe Yannone, my two owners, Phil Moran, Bob Tulipani, Henry, all the guys that come and do this."
Silk dedicated the victory to Bob Horn, who passed away in February. A fixture in the Modified racing world, Silk once raced for the car owner and wore the Bob Horn Racing firesuit while competing in Saturday's race.
"We're in Bob Horn Racing's firesuit today. We lost him last last month. Really good friend of mine and a previous car owner that I drove for. I wanted to dedicate this one to him."
Silk set fast time in qualifying for the event, but started from the ninth position following the redraw. Despite starting deeper in the field, Silk knew 75 laps would be plenty of time to pick his way through the field on the 5/8-mile oval. He patiently waited until the field filtered out before starting his drive through the pack.
"I was just kind of waiting for it to get single file. It got singled out pretty quickly there and I was really confident in the car all day. I thought once it got singled out, I could make a run to the front and it worked out that way."
Anthony Nocella finished second, followed by Jake Johnson, Jon McKennedy and Austin Beers.
The Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series returns to Thompson for its next race, the RaceChoice.com 75 on Wednesday, May 14.
