George Skora, III won the Erie Sports Commission 74 for the RoC Sportsman Modified Series on Saturday at Lake Erie Speedway.
The second day of Race of Champions 250 weekend at Lake Erie Speedway ended with George Skora, III in victory lane, celebrating his win in the Erie Sports Commission 74 for the RoC Sportsman Modified Series.
Skora took the lead on lap 46 from Shawn Nye, before suffered an abrupt end to his race on lap 64 with a mechanical issue. Skora then held off Andy Jankowiak to seal the victory.
Skora was emotional in victory lane, reflecting on what has been a trying year for him and the Race of Champions family.
“I’m a little emotional,” said Skora. ”We lost our good friend Norman Frazier this year. He came to Erie and helped me a ton in the Late Model. I knew he was riding with me today. This is sweet. This is a sweet one for us. We worked hard for it in the shop. We got both cars coming tomorrow, but this is a good start for us.
“Tough season losing people, and we’re going to miss them all. Evan Canfield’s one of them. I haven’t gotten to say anything about Evan. Great guy.”
Skora knew Jankowiak would be a factor at the end, but credited both him and Nye for racing him cleanly at the front of the field.
“The red flag, I was wondering if Andy got through it. I saw him in the mirror back there, I knew he was going to be tough. Shawn, give him credit, he ran me a great race. I don’t know. The car was on a rail. I could get to the gas so good coming off [the corner], and the drive was unbelievable.
“Worked hard for this setup. I need to thank Tommy Baldwin. He’s helped me a ton over the years. I can’t wait to see him tomorrow. We’ll get some high-fives, maybe have a couple of beers after the 250.”
Jankowiak continued a busy racing season, taking part in Saturday’s RoC Sportsman Modified event just two days after competing with the ARCA Menards Series at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“We were a little tight today,” said Jankowiak. “Probably right from the get-go, never really got the push out of it. We got boxed in there a little bit. We had our shot at the end, and George pulled away from us. He was a little bit better tonight, and that’s okay. Just appreciate everyone coming out, and we look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.”
Eddie Hawkins rounded out the podium. He was satisfied with a third-place finish considering the progress he and his team made with the car since the start of practice.
“The car was pretty good,” said Hawkins. “Just maybe a hair free, it kept me right on the bottom. From when we unloaded here yesterday, we were probably three-tenths off. To come this far and finish in the top three is very good.”
The 74th Race of Champions 250 concludes the massive weekend of racing on Sunday at Lake Erie Speedway. Fans can watch the event live on RacingAmerica.TV.
