A massive pileup ensued on Lap 5 of Friday night's 100-lap ASA Southern Super Series event at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.
The racers that made up the top five in the running order, Jeremy Doss, Hunter Robbins, Bubba Pollard, Jackson Boone, and William Byron were not involved, but just about every other car in the 28-car field had nowhere to go.
The incident was triggered by contact between reigning Snowball Derby champion Derek Thorn, and ASA Southern Super Series point leader Matthew Craig.
As Thorn and Craig made contact, Craig went around, and a track-blocking melee took place.
Here is a video replay of the wild crash from the Racing America broadcast of the event:
In all, it appeared that 17 of the 28 cars in Friday night's ASA Southern Super Series event were involved in the accident.
From the replay angles, it appears that in addition to Thorn and Craig, Augie Grill, Michael Goddard, Giovanni Ruggiero, John Bolen, William Sawalich, Hunter Wright, Travis Braden, Jordan Riddick, Michael Hinde, Boris Jurkovic, Dustin Smith, Tony Elrod, Clint Folsom, Justin Crider, and Ryan Herbert were all part of the crash.
The massive pileup will make for a long night for a lot of competitors as Friday night's event was the first leg of a weekend double-header, part of PepperJack Kennels Double Header Weekend at 5 Flags Speedway.
A second 100-lap event is set for Saturday night in Pensacola, which will also be carried live on Racing America for monthly subscribers.
