Zachary Curtis Credited With Second Crown Stock Derby 40 Victory
Nov 24, 2024
For the first time, the South Carolina 400 belongs to a driver from north of the border.
Treyten Lapcevich dominated the second half of the South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway on Saturday, scoring the victory in the marquee Late Model Stock event ahead of Doug Barnes, Jr. and Sam Yarbrough.
It is the third time since the event formerly recognized as the Myrtle Beach 400 moved to Florence Motor Speedway that the Chad Bryant Racing No. 77 has won the event. Ty Majeski won in both 2020 and 2021 for Chad Bryant.
Lapcevich showered the team with praise following the victory.
“It’s all thanks to the Chad Bryant Racing team,” said Lapcevich. “They brought me an awesome car. All weekend, I haven’t been too confidence, honestly. Chad and the team kept me in this.
“Huge thanks to EVIRUM and Bare Knuckles Fighting Championship. I honestly would not be here without their support. Huge thanks to my family. I’ve got a lot of people watching back home in Canada, so I appreciate the support. I appreciate Florence Motor Speedway for putting this awesome event on. I can’t believe it, honestly.”
Lapcevich’s journey has been unique, racing in the CARS Tour and marquee Late Model Stock Car events in the Southeastern United States one year after winning the NASCAR Canada Series title.
Now, he adds one of the biggest wins in the discipline to his resume.
“I’ve been pretty lucky with the opportunities I’ve been given,” said Lapcevich. “My parents started me out in this racing thing, this journey. There have been some highs and some lows, and we’ve had some people come on board and really push us to the next level.”
Lapcevich also moved to North Carolina during the summer months, working with the Chad Bryant Racing team before returning to Canada for school in the fall. He belives that bonding experience has been beneficial towards the gains he and the team have made to close out 2024.
“I feel like I’ve become a family with this whole time, honestly. I don’t know if I’ve ever had this much fun driving a race car for a full season. I moved down to Hickory in June to work with the guys in the shop. Unfortunately, I had to move back for school in September, but I feel like I made a great connection with the team. Chad and the guys always bring awesome race cars.”
“If you had told me this morning we’d end up in victory lane, I would have told you that you’re crazy. They believed in me, I believe in them. A whole lot of trust built there, and we were able to get it done.”
Lapcevich maintained a healthy advantage throughout the second half of the race. His closest competitor was none other than NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Dale Earnhardt, Jr., in the much-celebrated return of the Budweiser-sponsored No. 8.
However, Earnhardt, Jr. brought the iconic car to pit lane from the second position under caution with 31 laps remaining with apparent mechanical issues, unable to finish the event.
Coincidentally, it had been the No. 8 for JR Motorsports that followed the Chad Bryant Racing No. 77 across the finish line in both 2020 and 2021. Josh Berry finished second to Majeski in the 2020 edition of the South Carolina 400, with Carson Kvapil doing the same one year later.
Doug Barnes, Jr. finished second, followed by Sam Yarbrough, Jacob Heafner and Carson Loftin.
