Montgomery Ready to Make History Again
The ASA Southern Super Series heads to Montgomery Motor Speedway on Saturday.
It's one of the oldest tracks on the ASA Southern Super Series schedule. Alabama’s Montgomery Motor Speedway has made its mark in both short track history and in the Deep South. Getting set to host its 17th race in the ASA Southern Super Series, Montgomery has been a proving ground for young drivers and championship contenders.
“As a whole, we are really proud of the partnership with the Southern Super Series,” said Montgomery Motor Speedway General Manager Stan Narrison. “We have seen some really competitive races over the years at the Rumble by the River 125-lap distance. With us going with the four-tire format for this race, guys are going to have to save their stuff to be there at the end. There are some young kids that might not understand that you have to save tires for the last 25 laps and that will make it interesting.”
Narrison wears many hats on race day, but he’s also got an eye for handicapping the field and spotting would-be winners.
“It’s tough to pick a guy to beat, but you have Gio (Ruggiero) who was our track Show Me The Money Champion last year," added Narrison. “He’s a good kid who has some good car control and he’s going to be solid with the Wilson team this weekend.”
Interestingly enough, Ruggiero won those races at the Pro Late Model level with Anthony Campi Racing, who will field a mount for Casey Roderick this weekend. Roderick also has lots of Pro Late Model success at Montgomery, but he’s never won a Southern Super Series race there. He does have six top-five runs there, but is still seeking that first trophy.
“It’s surprising that a guy like Roderick has not won here with the Southern Super Series,” explained Narrison. “We have had some great races here and you really never know how things will end up. I remember the Alabama 200 that Anderson Bowen won a few years back. He was running well and was in the right place at the right time to surprise some people.”
Bowen is one of 10 different drivers who have tasted victory at Montgomery in the past.
“I look at a guy like John Bolen as a sleeper,” added Narrison. “He has a lot of laps here at Montgomery and a long race where you have to save tires could play into his favor. Jett Noland has looked good this year. I would love to see a first-time winner and we have a few candidates for that. We will have to see how it will all shake out.”
Any one of these guys could become the 11th different winner at Montgomery in the Southern Super Series.
Before the show, the local classes will be on center stage with the touring series Rumble by the River 125.
“We pride ourselves on the whole show and we hope those who are coming to Montgomery for the first time enjoy our Late Model Sportsman class,” said Narrison. ”It’s basically a place for older Late Model cars to run and we try to keep the rule book really thin to allow as many guys to race as we can. Also, our Outlaws will be a part of the show too.”
Racing gets underway at 7:30 pm CT on Saturday, April 15th. The ASA Southern Super Series will be joined by the local Outlaws division for 40 laps and the Late Model Sportsman who will go 40 laps as well. There will be an on-track autograph session at 6:30 pm CT
