NASCAR Cup Series
'What Could Have Been' for Wallace in Daytona Runner-Up
Feb 21, 2022
The winner of the 46th Rattler could take home one of the largest purses in the event’s history.
Several businesses and individuals have pledged lap money bonuses for the Hardee’s Rattler 250 and Grasshopper 125 presented by JR’s Lawn Mower Shop. The pledges have added $2,500 to the purse for the Super Late Model event, and $1,250 to the Pro Late Model race.
The payout is simple - lead the lap, win the cash. If the winner of Sunday’s race leads all 250 laps, they will pocket $17,500, and the Pro Late Model winner has the opportunity to grab $6,250.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Southern Super Series adding incentives to increase the amount the winner takes home, and the starting money base for each competitor.
“We are always looking for ways to increase our payout,” said John Dykes, owner of South Alabama Speedway. “We are very thankful for these companies and individuals for coming on board to help grow the Rattler.”

Lap sponsorship opportunities were put on sale for $10, and sold out in less than two weeks. Multiple companies stepped up for a chance to be a part of the Rattler 250, including U.S. Tank and Cryogenics, Southern Truck Outfitters, Strange Oval, Golden Sands Mobile Home Movers, Bryant Racing Equipment, Ollie’s Auto Glass, Southern Creek Clothing, Insinger Performance and Custom Woodworks.
Several local racers and fans also pledged lap money, including Tim Peters, Scott Grunwald, Paul Boswell, James Harvey, Jason Reeves, Hunter Worley, Matthew Levrington, and Logan Boyett.
U.S Tank and Cryogenics purchased all 125 lap of Saturday’s Pro Late Model race. That event will be renamed the “Grasshopper 125 presented by JR’s Lawn Mower Shop, and powered by U.S. Tank.”
In addition, Godfrey Environmental Contracts has put up $500 in bonus bucks to the pole winner for Saturday’s Pro Late Model race, bringing the potential race winner’s purse to $6,750.
The 46th Annual Rattler weekend begins Friday, March 11 with late model practice and a full card of local division action. Saturday’s action includes Super and Pro Late Model qualifying and SAS Roadrunners and Modifieds, in addition to the 125-lap Pro Late Model event.
Sunday’s Hardees Rattler 250 is slated for a 2 p.m. green flag.
“We are working every day to make this year’s race the biggest and best yet,” said Dykes. “Sandra and I look forward to seeing everyone in March and getting another season started off right.”
