Defending APC United Late Model Series champion Kyle Steckly became the first repeat winner of the 2024 season, taking the checkered flag in the NTN BCA 100 Sunday at Delaware Speedway.

Steckly took the lead from Jake Sheridan on lap 71 and held off a charging Jo Lawrence in the closing laps to secure the victory, his sixth with the series since 2021.

“We started off a little loose for sure, there,” said Steckly. “The car came to me good on the long run. Just huge thanks to my 22 Racing team. They gave me a great car the whole time. It feels good to win at Delaware Speedway in the NTN 100.”

Steckly believes much of his success in recent years begins at the shop, making sure cars are in perfect running order before they arrive at the race track.

“Everything I’ve learned from my dad. Going over the routine of making sure nothing’s wrong with the car with a good maintenance program. Constantly learning, we’re never satisfied, we keep making the car better every single week.”

Steckly couldn’t rest easily as the laps clicked down. Jo Lawrence, a former series champion in his won right, stalked Steckly to the finish line but ultimately could not put himself in position to take the lead.

“I would say it was pretty evenly matched. It was close enough that if he messed up, I could capitalize. He ran a great race and he deserved that win. Congratulations to that team.”

Jake Sheridan finished third for the second straight APC event, backing up a podium finish two weeks ago at Peterborough Speedway. Sheridan admitted he lacked the pace to compete with the top two.

“My pace didn’t change much all day. I just found my pace that I knew I could do, and I just had to ride with it. It worked out where the 22 and the 78 were saving and I just tried to keep as much track position as I could in case it went green.

“Honestly, I needed a caution, because I cooked the brakes off the car doing the pace I was doing.”

Race five for the APC United Late Model Series takes place on July 13 at Flamboro Speedway. Flamboro was the site of Steckly’s first win this season, with J.R. Fitzpatrick finishing second and Shae Gemmell rounding out the podium in that race.
