Dustin Smith went to victory lane on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway, taking the win in the 50-lap Pro Late Model feature at the Alabama half-mile.
Smith took the lead on lap five from Trey Grimes and pulled away to win by nearly six seconds ahead of Grimes and Grant Thompson.
“I can’t thank Okie Mason [enough] for keeping me up on the wheel there,” said Smith in victory lane. “About halfway, I come over the radio and said I’m about wore out. Mr. Eddie Shoemaker getting me this Rogers-Dabbs 604 crate motor, it’s a hell of a motor. I might just keep it in there.
Grimes was pleased with his second-place finish, coming in his first trip to Mobile International Speedway.
“Yesterday evening, we got here about 3:30 after the truck broke down on the way here. Turned my first laps on this track yesterday evening. Showed up today and thought we had a pretty good car.
Didn’t know what to expect, like I say, I hadn’t even been here. I’m so proud of us as a crew and a whole group. We come down here looking to have fun. I honestly didn’t expect to be up here on the frontstretch, but I’ll take it.”
Grant Thompson and his team put in plenty of work on Friday after a last-minute decision to take part in Saturday’s race at Mobile. While he lost the second spot to Grimes in the closing laps, he was content with a podium finish.
“Not a bad day. It was a last-minute decision we made Thursday night. We spent all day on thrashing on it Friday to get it ready. We showed up today, we weren’t bad in practice and qualifying. We should have made a change we didn’t make, and it bit us on the long run, but we’ll take it.”
