For Chase Burda, it was the perfect finish to a dream season Friday evening at Winchester Speedway.
The 18-year-old driver from Michigan entered Friday’s JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour event with the season championship already in hand for the Pro Late Model series. However, he went to Winchester looking for one last triumph, the big win on Winchester 400 weekend.
He accomplished just that, taking the lead in just seven laps after starting fourth and never looking back for his fourth – and biggest – win of the season.
One year ago, Chase Burda nearly scored his first JEGS/CRA win in this event, leading 92 of the race’s 100 laps. However, William Sawalich took the lead with five laps to go and left with the checkered flag.
There was no such repeat this time, as Burda sealed the deal and finished ahead of Michael Hinde for the victory.
“This is incredible. Last year we led 90, 95 laps of it and were one spot short. To come back here, win a few weeks ago here and then do it again is incredible. To win the championship this year and win the final race is awesome.”
Burda has now won championships in two different divisions under the Champion Racing Association banner. In 2019, Burda claimed the CRA Junior Late Model Series title, winning six of the season’s eight races.
“It’s amazing. Just from the Junior Late Models the first year and this. To come here this year, win four races and win the championship, it’s something I wouldn’t have believed when I was a kid.”
Kevin Cremonesi finished third, followed by Barrett Polhemus and James Krueger.
In other feature racing on Friday at Winchester, Tom Gasser won the Vores Compact Touring Series 30-lap main event. There were also a pair of "New Star" races to close out Friday's program, with Shawn Grace winning in the CRA Late Model Sportsmen event and Duane Damon winning the CRA Street Stock race.
The Midwest Modified Tour "Run for the Gun 50" will headline Saturday's racing card, which will also include the CRA Street Stock Series, CRA Late Model Sportsmen Series and Winchester Speedway Crown Vics.
Super Late Models will also practice and qualify on Saturday ahead of Sunday's 52nd Winchester 400, the ninth race of the ASA STARS National Tour season.
