Austin Teras Opens Doubleheader Weekend at Oxford Plains In Victory Lane
May 26, 2024
Kulwicki Driver Development Program finalist Brandon Varney went to victory lane on Sunday, winning the Oxford Championship Series Super Late Model feature at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Varney took the lead from Dominic Curit on a lap 37 restart and pulled away to win by nearly two seconds to close out a doubleheader weekend at the Maine facility.
The win is a huge bounce-back for Varney. He showed speed on Saturday to open the doubleheader, but his night ended early and he was credited with a 21st-place finish.
After some big changes to the Dennis Spencer Motorsports No. 12, Varney was back and on a mission Sunday.
“I feel good," said Varney. "We ran into this feature not really knowing what this car was going to do. We took a big swing, changed some stuff around. We hit on something, so I’m very glad for that."
The circumstances that led Varney to the No. 12 also demonstrate the roller coaster ride of late for Varney. His own Super Late Model suffered an engine failure with the Pro All Stars Series at White Mountain Motorsports Park one week ago.
The Spencer team offered their No. 12 for the weekend at Oxford, and Varney drove it to the win.
“We blew up last week at White Mountain and had a really good car. Dennis was nice enough to let us use his personal car. I’m happy to put it in victory lane for him.”
Curit held on for second place after leading the first 37 laps of the event, and was plenty excited with that result.
“I’ll take it any day. This is a hard class to race in. Just to be able to lead laps in this class is awesome. I spun the tires a little bit on that last restart. I think that’s why he got in front of me. I’m happy with P2. We’ll regroup for next weekend.”
Calvin Rose finished third, followed by Trevor Sanborn and Saturday winner Austin Teras.
The next couple of weekends will be busy for Oxford Plains’ contingent of racers. The Oxford Championship Series races again on Saturday, June 1 for Allen’s Coffee Brandy Night. The following weekend sees another doubleheader, with a 100-lap qualifier for the Celebration of America 300 on Saturday, June 8 and Pro All Stars Series twin-150s on Sunday, June 9.
