Bakersfield, CA – As a follow up to a successful first year of sanctioning Super Late Model events east of the Rockies, the ‘SRL National’ is now focused on a full schedule of races spanning coast to coast in 2023.
“Even though the bulk of our ‘SRL National’ schedule will focus on tracks east of the Rockies, our first event of ‘23 will be the $25,000 to win “All-Star Showdown” at Irwindale Speedway in California on January 21st,” stated the SRL’s Larry Collins. “We had a great initial season of our expansion from the west coast, and we can’t thank the fans, the tracks and the teams enough for their support in 2022.”
In 2022, the ‘SRL National’ sanctioned events at Citrus County Speedway in Florida, Mobile International Speedway and two races at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan. Ty Majeski beat Bubba Pollard to win at Citrus County, William Byron led wire-to-wire at Berlin’s ‘Money’ in the Bank 150’, local standout Evan Shotko beat a strong field at the $30,000 to win ‘Battle at Berlin’ and Pollard scored the win over Donnie Wilson at Mobile.
For fifteen seasons Collins and Brian Olsen have owned and managed the SPEARS (SRL) Southwest Tour Series for Super Late Models, based in Bakersfield, CA. In 2014, the series brought on Technical Director Ricky Brooks and now the three have formed the ‘SRL National’.
“We run our race series based on what is good for the race teams and what is good for the tracks that host our events. We’ve been fortunate to have teams from the Southeast and Midwest come to our Southwest Tour Series events over the years, and their encouragement to bring our style of race management east has been the driving force to establish the ‘SRL National’.” Collins added.
In working to establish a national series, and an appropriate championship points system, the SRL has had months of discussions with the Super Late Model community.
“With the trend of points systems today becoming more complicated, we wanted a system that was simple and easy to understand,” stated Collins. “We also wanted a system that allowed a driver to miss races, but still have a shot at the title.”
For 2023, the ranking of drivers who compete in 2023 ‘SRL National’ events will be ranked by total money won at the events they compete in. Some of the marque events will pay more money, which typically draws more of the top teams, so drivers will be rewarded accordingly at those bigger events.
